I came across the book Writing, Publishing, and Marketing by Karen Cioffi almost incidentally. It’s a guide of sorts, for writers hoping to become authors. That may sound redundant, but trust me, there is a fine distinction between the two. Authors think of themselves accomplished over writers, if not actually published. I should know. I’m one of them. It is my belief that anyone can write. A writer is someone who taps out a few lines for a newspaper, magazine or even a web log. Crossing over from writer to author means that one has graduated to the next level. In a nutshell, writers compose pieces. Authors compose masterpieces. To sit down and write a story with a beginning, middle and end takes discipline, patience and lots of practice. When it’s done, we are filled with a sense of achievement. Our manuscript stands as our legacy and validates our dreams.
What I liked about Cioffi’s Writing, Publishing and Marketing, is that it helps bring those dreams closer for those who don’t really know where to begin. It takes all the little things that writers learn along their journey to becoming authors and packs it into one neat little production. Indeed, new and established writers both can benefit greatly from this gem of a tool. Cioffi takes a multi-faceted concept and breaks it down into easily digestible parts that one can follow like a template to success. This seven-part publication offers tips and valuable insight from Cioffi’s own experiences on writing and publishing, including self-publishing, marketing and promotion. Also included are articles and reference that help make sense of it all, as well as tons on links to reading and resource books on writing and promotion.
I have been writing, publishing and marketing my books for over ten years and cannot think of a thing that I could add to make this reference guide more complete. It is clear, concise and comprehensive, and a must for everyone who dreams of capturing their imagination in words for all to read.
