Keep Your Website Focused

Apr23
2011
1 Comment Written by admin

In a recent teleseminar about the importance of creating a focused brand and website, the presenter of the class happened to pull up one of my sites. She quickly noted a couple of obvious errors that I let slip by.

While I really should have known better, it seems as we get caught up in our writing careers sometimes it’s easy to forget to remain focused.

That’s a no-no! It’s important to present a focused brand and site.

Okay, so what were my possible money costing mistakes?

1. Create a website or blog using your own name.

I created my first site before I learned the ropes. Jumping in feet first, without any thought of future endeavors, I named my first site based on my first children’s book. It happened I had a co-author and I used both our names for the site.

So, you may be asking, what’s the problem with this move? Well, nothing, if all my future books, articles, and other writing endeavors included that co-author.

But, as any writer can tell you this is usually not the case.

While you can redirect one site to another, it’s not the same. You end up possibly confusing readers or new visitors. And, if you don’t redirect to your new site, you’ll dilute you traffic.

The simplest fix to this problem is to avoid it.

The purpose of having your name as the site name is to create a specific brand/platform that is YOU. And, having your name as the site name will also make it easier for people searching with your name as a keyword to find you.

This is not to say that you can’t have a site/s specifically for your book/s, but it’s important to also have a site with your name as the domain name as the core. Remember, you are branding you as an author.

2. If you are branding yourself as a children’s writer, keep your site specific to writing for children.

This holds true for whatever your platform is – keep it focused.

This was another of my big mistakes that I let slip by. As I progressed in my writing, I ventured into a number of writing arenas including ghostwriting, freelance writing, and even copywriting. Instead of keeping those areas separate, I brought them into my children’s writing site.

So, why is this a mistake? Simple. Dilution of expertise.

In the subheading of the children’s writing site, I mentioned ghostwriting and freelance writing. Now, this may not be too far fetched because I do ghostwrite children’s books, but that shouldn’t be the emphasis at that site.

If you are branding yourself as a children’s writer, the focus of your site should be children’s writing. If you promote yourself as doing this, that, and the other thing, you’ll become known as the jack of all trades and master of none, thus creating dilution of expertise.

This goes for any specific genre you are writing in, if you intend to establish yourself as an expert in that field. You need to keep your site focused. Establish your brand and promote it.

If you are involved in other writing arenas, create a separate site for promoting yourself as an expert in those areas.

MPA Advises Intrinsic and Extrinsic Program for Improving Business

Apr16
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

What!? Yes, this is a bit different from the focus of this site, but it’s also an example of the diversity of my ghostwriting and freelance writing skills.

While I do focus on writing and marketing, I am also a ghostwriter and freelance writer for business and health content, and it’s important for visitors to see the types of content I produce.

So, here is an example of a business article:

MPA Advises Intrinsic and Extrinsic Program for Improving Business

There’s a new kid on the block, the Motivation Professionals Association (MPA). This new association made its debut at The Motivation Show 2010.

According to an article at Incentive Magazine, the goal of the MPA is to help “companies integrate the authors, trainers, and speakers of the personal development and personal motivation industry with the incentive industry.”(1)

CEO of Engagement Partners and MPA Founding President Ira Ozer explained the benefit of combining employee motivation, along with extrinsic rewards, “When we combine motivation psychology and the personal and intrinsic motivation methods of leading experts with the extrinsic rewards of incentive programs, we create better results than using either method alone.”(1)

Pete Erickson, managing director of The Motivation Show, added that incentive programs skillfully coupled with employee recognition, training, meetings, communication, and loyalty programs are known to improve business.

The plans for MPA, Erickson noted, is to “provide our current community with education and best practices in the field of personal development and training.”(1) It will also bring fresh blood, a new audience of buyers and suppliers who are keen on finding out more in regard to employee engagement programs, including employee incentives and recognition.

As mentioned above, the two incentives need to be skillfully combined. Using the sports arena as an example, “athletes in highly competitive levels of sport may experience decreases in their intrinsic motivation because of the increasing use of extrinsic rewards.”(2) Offsetting the increase of extrinsic rewards by adding or increasing intrinsic rewards will be a necessary strategy to keep employees satisfied.

Offering the best of both worlds, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation will go a long way in retaining valuable employees and acquiring new talent, this in turn will improve the company’s bottom line. Satisfied and engaged employees are motivated to be an asset to the company.

~~~~~
Along with being able to write for different genres, it’s important for content ghostwriters, freelance writers, and copywriters to know SEO and keyword optimization. The keywords for the above article are italicized and would have links to them for an actual client.
Article Directories and Ghostwriters – Strategies to Save You Time
Oct08
2010
Leave a Comment Written by admin
With everyone so busy these days, we are all looking for strategies to help us get more done in less time. Well, there are a few ways to do this – we’ll discuss two of them today.
Article Directories
Article directories are a great way to add great content to your site. You can visit the vast number of directories out there in cyberspace and pick and choose the articles that work best for your niche. I’ve found articles I’ve written for directories that have been picked up and posted on a number of sites, so I know it’s a good strategy to keep in mind. The author is happy to see writers utilizing their work, and the blogger has fresh content for his/her site. That’s what you call a win-win situation.
There are hundreds of article directories, if not more. A few of the popular ones are: EzineArticles.com; AssociatedContent.com; Suite101.com; Helium.com; Examiner.com; iSnare.com; and ArticleCity.com. They all have a search feature that will make it easy to find the type of articles you are looking for.
Please keep in mind though, you must keep the article intact – this means keeping any and all bylines and links. Otherwise folks, it’s called plagiarism.
Ghostwriting
Ghostwriting is about providing you with great content, articles and more; with you getting all the credit. This is the perfect strategy when you want that personal touch and when you want an article or story to reflect you. It is collaboration between the GW and the author. Providing the GW with facts, impressions, or ideas will help him/her create an article that will seem as if it’s coming from you.
If you’re stumped, the GW can come up with her own ideas for articles and content. You’re in the drivers seat.
While it’s true that you can post articles from article directories on your site (if you do this, again be sure to include the author’s byline), it’s important to create your own platform also. The only way to become known as an expert in your niche is to let others know that you know what you’re talking about. This means providing information with your own personal style, or at least with your name on it.
You can also work with a ghostwriter to create e-books to sell, or offer as freebies on your site. This is a great way to entice readers to subscribe to your site, increase your mailing list, and become known as an expert in your niche.
Search Marketing and Spam
Sep12
2010
Leave a Comment Written by admin
Marketing budgets for online search marketing is steadily rising. Businesses and their marketing departments are very aware of the importance of promoting their brand and products online. And, since the majority of buyers use online search engines to learn about products and to buy products, this particular means of reaching customers is quickly becoming a necessity . . . a mainstay.
In an April 2006 article posted at SearchEngineWatch.com, the two basic reasons why search marketing works was brought to light:
1. “Search delivers the specific, relevant information consumers are looking for—just when they need it.”(1)
2. Search provides proven results. And, “a positive ROI (if you do it right!).(1)
These are two powerful reasons for businesses to make haste in upping their search marketing budgets. And, the information available clearly shows that search marketing is effective for big ticket items such as cars to small items such as allergy symptom relief products.
It should be noted here that there are two different strategies for search marketing:
1. The first provides a link to a landing page that is primarily advertisement – possibly a very long copywritten ad, or maybe unreliable and unrelated content, but no real substance for the visitor (consumer).
2. The second strategy is organic SEO. This utilizes inbound marketing strategies. The business/marketer provides information in the form of content (posts or articles) that is valuable to the visitor. This informational content creates a trust: the visitor appreciates and values the provided data.
No matter which search marketing strategy is used, they both rely on keywords. A keyword is a word or group of words that target specific searchers. For example, if a consumer is looking for a quality air cleaner because he suffers from allergies, he may enter “air cleaner,” or “allergy cleaner” as his keyword.
If the marketer has done his work, his company’s url will be visible in the search engine, and the consumer may very well click on his link.
In a perfect world, this would be a perfect system; those sites who put time and effort into providing valuable information would lead the pack. But, unfortunately, there are marketers who use a number of varying keywords to lure the consumer to a number of different landing pages, all of which are to sell their products. Or, they may use another form of link manipulation, thereby diluting the system with spam.
How Does Spam Effect Search Marketing?
Some words are easy targets for spammers; based on statistics gathered by keyword search tools, a marketer can find keywords that will drive specific targeted traffic to his sites.
While there are some restrictions on the use of keywords, spamming and SEO, many spammers slip through the cracks. For example, paid links violate Google’s guidelines, but this doesn’t stop many of spammers – some sites pay a host of bloggers to link to them using anchor text. Often, in this scenario the linking blogs are unrelated to the target site, the brief content is of poor quality, or they are spam sites themselves.
While search engines such as Google should be clamping down on this type of behavior, lately they are not. Could it be spamming is just too prevalent?
Why Does Search Marketing Spam Matter?
Spamming is cheating, pure and simple. This practice not only affects the hard working honest marketer, it hurts the consumers looking for quality information, and it will ultimately hurt the search engines that allow it.
By spamming, companies can get high rankings in the search engines. This means their link will be one of the first a consumer will see when he types in a corresponding keyword. That link may lead the consumer to a pure promo landing page (often used by affiliate marketers), or maybe to a site with content produced by content mills. Either way, the consumer gets the short end of the stick, as does the legitimate marketer.
Writing for Article Directories: 7 Steps
May15
2010
1 Comment Written by admin
Among marketing strategies, writing for article directories is certainly up there. It offers a large readership with the advantage of having those readers click back to your site.
While it is writing for free, it should be considered a part of your business expense, at least your time aspect of it. Just like any other form of marketing it is used to create and increase your visibility. It’s an investment.
I know it can get tedious having to write and submit articles to the directories, but the articles don’t have to be long. Here are 7 steps to writing for the directories:
1. Create a title
You want your title to be search engine friendly. Be sure you have your keyword/s in it–make it specific also.
2. Write an outline
This is optional, because there are many writers who can write with the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants method. But, if you are more comfortable with an outline, that’s fine. It does provide structure.
3. Create List, How-to, and Step-by-Step articles
This is a popular way to go. Readers love to see simple 1, 2, 3 lists of what they should do or should Not do.
Be sure to include your keyword/s in the first paragraph and a couple of times throughout the article. Just don’t overdo it.
4. Parts of the article
Your first paragraph should be interesting and let the reader know what the article is about, but don’t give away too much–you want the reader to continue reading.
Your second paragraph or section should inform and elaborate on the first paragraph. This part should fulfill the reader’s expectations.
Your last paragraph should sum up what the article is about and conclude with a lead-in to your resource box.
5. Write the minimum word count or just above
Check the guidelines for each particular directory. The minimum word count is usually around 300-400. But, check the site to make sure.
Burn-out is easy with article marketing, especially when you’re writing for your own sites also. Keeping the articles short and to the point helps in this area.
6. The resource box
Some sites allow you to include a resource box which is about you and what you can offer the reader. Check the site’s guidelines because they may have specific requirements for the length of the resource box in relation to the length of the article.
7. SUBMIT
Once your article is complete, submit to a number of article directories. A couple of the most popular are Ezine Articles, Associated Content, Suite101, and Helium.
Note: If possible change the title of the article and at least the beginning content a bit. This will make the search engines think it’s new content.
That’s about it. Write, write, write . . .
Creating Websites and Blogs: Plan First
You would think that creating websites and blogs wouldn’t have any consequences, but if they’re not properly thought out, they may.
I have to admit that I do everything fast. Well, not like I use to when young and healthy, but old habits die hard.
What I mean is I get an idea and instead of taking my time and thoroughly thinking it through…carefully planning and thinking of future endeavors and how this decision will factor into all aspects of my writing, I jump in. I quickly choose a domain name and throw up a website or blog.
Now, you may say, so what’s the big deal. Well, in the visibility and marketing world it’s a HUGE deal.
Suppose you start out with one book, or wanting to write in one specific genre. You know you have to create a website to get your visibility started so you go to Blogger or WordPress and create a free site. Or, maybe, you go to BlueHost or GoDaddy and pay for a site. Whichever, you choose a domain name without thinking of any possible consequences to this seemingly innocent move.
Maybe you choose: I’m Learning to Write, or Jane Doe Writes for Children. Or, maybe your first writing venture you have a co-author or contributor and you create a joint site. See where I’m going with this.
Suppose your domain name is “Ann and Jill Just for Children.” Your starting out so this seems reasonable. But, a year or two later and Jill has nothing to do with your current writing life. And, you’ve authored another children’s book and a couple of writing and marketing e-books. Not only that, but you now write articles in multiple genres.
Now what do you do?
Your traffic and subscribers are all connected with Ann and Jill Just for Children. Ah, a light goes off…you’ll create another site. And, then you decide you want to offer some services so you create yet another site. You’ll lead your readers from Ann and Jill to your other sites.
Before you know it you’re stretching yourself thin just trying to add content to all your sites which will limit your time to actually write for publication,  follow your groups, social networks, and do research.
Ah, the webs that we weave…
So, the moral of the story is THINK BIG and take possible future endeavors into consideration when choosing a domain name and creating your website and/or blog.
Until next time,
