Book Marketing: Choose a Website Domain Name

Sep17
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

The first rung on your marketing ladder is to create a quality product, in the case of an author, that would be a book. You need to create an engaging story, be part of a critique group, make sure the manuscript gets edited, and have a knock-out cover.

Creating the book might be considered Research and Development under the Marketing umbrella, and the foundation of a marketing strategy.

The second step or rung on the marketing ladder is the actual book promotion: creating a platform and brand for you and your book. This is accomplished through visibility. A platform is a means to let readers know what your area of expertise is.

You may be shaking your head and thinking you don’t have an area of expertise, well the very first step to establish yourself as an expert is to create a website or blog.

Your Website’s Domain Name

Choose your domain name carefully and think ahead. Marketing experts always advise using ‘your name’ for your domain name. While you can have multiple sites, your name should be your main or central site.

On the other hand, if you write in a specific genre, you should include that in your domain name. If you’re a children’s writer, maybe: Children’s Books by Your Name, or Picture Books by Your Name. The more specific you make your domain name the more likely those searching online for that genre will find you.

Why is it so important to have your name in your central site’s title?

The answer is for those searching by your name to find you. Maybe Reader A doesn’t know the name of your book, but does remember your author name.

Why if you write in a specific genre is it important to include that in your site’s title?

Simply put: If you sell shoes and your domain name is John Smith, how will those searching online for shoes ever find you?

Using Keywords in Your Website Name

The idea is to make multiple avenues of search that lead to your site. In other words, you need multiple keywords that are relevant to your site. Keywords that will allow the search engines to index your site and allow readers doing online searches to find your site. Again, the more specific the better.

And, be sure to use appropriate keywords in the subtitle of your site.

As mentioned, you can create multiple sites. You might have ‘your name.com’ as your central site and then create other sites and choose other domain names for the titles of your books, or possible for a particular niche or genre.

For example, I have a blogsite specifically for my books: Walking Through Walls (http://walkingthroughwalls-kcioffi.blogspot.com), and another specifically for Day’s End Lullaby (http://daysendlullaby). These sites offer information related to the books.

With the number of ‘free’ websites and blogsites available, you can have a site that’s unique for each of your books and/or niches that you write in.

Outsourcing Articles – Is it Right for You?

Jun12
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

Recently, a writer/marketer who always has valuable information recommended outsourcing as a means of effectively and quickly getting a number of articles written. He was using a particular service to create a niche site for affiliate marketing, but it can be used just as effectively to create visibility and traffic to your own sites and products.

The marketer stated that he paid $3 to have articles rewritten and distributed to hundreds of article directories.

Wait a minute . . .

While I’m sure this is true, guaranteed the rewritten articles are not done by professional writers. It’s possible the writers or spinners are using a rewriting/spinning program.

A rewriting program chooses random words to change, or the author creates a list of words for the program to find and change. Some can also rework paragraphs, but it’s not the same as a writer. These programs can’t tell if they’re missing the mark on clarity in the content, or if they are changing the meaning.

Outsourcing these types of articles is similar to purchasing private label rights (PLR) articles. PLRs are articles that you can buy by the bundle at a low cost and use with your own byline.

But, consumer beware. You may have an embarrassing situation on your hands if you don’t proofread and edit the articles before using them. Often, these articles are rewritten by non-English speaking writers, or writers who are overly concerned with quantity over quality.

Remember, it’s the content that creates the organic traffic funnel to your site. You should offer your visitors/readers quality content. And, now that Google took steps to reduce spam sites, it’s even more important to have quality content.

But, for those of you who don’t mind having to edit each article, PLRs or outsourcing on-the-cheap may be an option. Certainly, there are some writers who feel it’s easier to rewrite an existing article than create one from scratch.

Some of us are on the other end of the outsourcing chain. We ghostwrite or rewrite articles for marketers or others who are looking for quality content. As professional writers, we know the importance of creating quality over quantity. If you want to create an impressive article utilizing facts and quotes, and shining with clarity, you can’t use rewriting programs, or writers who aren’t professional.

One important factor as a writer is that your writing is a reflection of you and your writing ability; it should always be the best it can be, whether you are writing for yourself or for a client. The same holds true if you are hiring a professional writer to ghostwrite articles for you; unless you’re very familiar with the ghostwriter’s work, be sure to proofread any content you’re publishing before hand. Remember, your name will be associated with that content.

Depending on your writing needs, you will have to decide if you want quality or quantity, if you choose to outsource.

If you are an affiliate marketer, it’s all about getting as much traffic as possible to a niche site that has a copy ad landing page urging the visitor to BUY. The more traffic the greater the chances of sales and an affiliate commission. Conversion rates rule . . . quality often takes a back seat to quantity. But, again, the search engines are cracking down on fluff or spam sites, so be sure to take that into account.

Podcasting for Writers Workshop

May06
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

I am the founder and manager of Writers on the Move, a group of experienced and new writers/authors of multiple genres who strive to share their combined wealth of writing and marketing knowledge with all, as well as use cross-promotional strategies to increase visibility.

As a NEW feature to the group, Writers on the Move is now offering Workshops on writing and marketing. The first FREE class will be presented by Maggie Ball: Podcasting for Writers; it is scheduled for May 16th at 7pm EST.

Registration is required, so please stop by our blogsite for the details:
http://vbt-writersonthemove.blogspot.com/2011/04/all-new-writers-on-move-workshop.html

Or, email Maggie Ball directly at:
maggieball@compulsivereader.com

Please put “Podcasting Workshop” in the subject box.

After registering you will receive a PDF with a comprehensive outline specifically designed for the class. This will allow you to work on creating a podcast before the class and then ask any questions you may have during the workshop. You will also receive the password to access the chat.

A bit about the workshop:

The simplest definition of a podcast is just a recorded radio show and Maggie will provide the information you need to get your podcast up and running. She’ll define what a podcast is and the many different ways you can either do a single podcast, or start your own “radio show” or even syndication with recorded podcasts.

This will be a very informative workshop for writers who want, rather need to bring their books and/or services to a larger audience. If you’re blogging now, the next step is to create podcasts.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Websites That Work – 7 Key Factors (Part 2)

Apr09
2011
3 Comments Written by admin

We’re back with the last 4 key factors to create a website that works.

If you didn’t get to read Part 1 yet, check it out here:

http://www.karencioffi.com/2011/04/websites-that-work-7-key-factors-part-1/

4. The ‘About Me’ or ‘About Us’ Page

Let the visitors know who you are with an About Me Page. This is especially important on sites that do not use the site owner’s name as the title. There are so many sites where a visitor needs to search to see who the site belongs to – it can be a bit frustrating, as well as a waste of the visitor’s time. There are even some sites that do not offer this information.

Along with the names of the site’s contributors, you should let the visitors know what the site is about, what they can expect from the site, what information will provided.

The About Me Page should include a bio along with any pertinent schooling and/or training. Most visitors want to know who is posting the content and what qualifies them to offer that particular information.

Providing this information allows the reader to develop a relationship with you.

5. The Media Page

Create a Media Page. This page will tell visitors what you’ve written and other qualifications that make you an expert in your field. You should also include your books, reviews of your work, brief synopses and possibly excerpts, links to the sales pages, testimonials and awards, links to interviews others have written on you, events/workshops you’ve presented, your appearances, and links to all your other sites.

6. The Contact Page

Your contact information needs to be available. This means having a Contact Page that offers a contact form, or your email address. A visitor may have a question, comment, or request for your services; you want that visitor to be able to know how to reach you.

7. The Resource Page

Probably the second most important factor that will make visitors find your site valuable is providing a Resource Page. This page should provide links to pertinent books, sites, and tools related to your niche. Visitor will appreciate the effort and information, thereby making your site of value to them. It will also prompt them to link to your site, and recommend it to others.

And remember, when creating a website, simple is usually best.

Websites That Work – 7 Key Factors (Part 1)

Apr03
2011
1 Comment Written by admin

Marketing in an oversaturated market is a difficult journey. Whether you’re promoting a book, services, or other product, you will have tons of competition. And, if you don’t have a website, you won’t be able to get in the marketing game.

No matter what product or service you’re offering, having a website is an absolutely must.

While it’s not that difficult to create a website or blogsite using services, such as WordPress (http://wordpress.com) or Blogger (http://blogger.com), there are essential steps you will need to take in order to create an EFFECTIVE site.

Here is a list of 7 of the most essential and bare-bottom basics that are needed for an effective website:

1. The Name of Your Site

Create a site with your name as the domain name. Even if you already have one or more sites with different names, take the time to create one with your name. This can be your central site that leads to your other specific platforms. Think of it as the Sun to your other orbiting web planets.

If you have multiple sites, include them on your Media Page and on your About You page.

2. The Subheading

When including a site subheading, think of your platform. In your subheading add keywords you want associated with your site. These are words that should quickly inform the search engines what your site is about.

3. The Opt-in Box

Provide a readily visible opt-in box. This is one of the only ways you will be able to create a mailing list. A useful way to entice visitors to sign up for your info emails or newsletter is to offer a free gift. Usually an e-book related to your site’s focus is a practical gift.

The opt-in box should be placed in the top portion of your sidebar, and must be immediately visible upon landing on the page – this means it needs to be above the fold line.

Stop by next week for Key Factors 4 through 7.

Create and Sell Your Own eBooks – Free Workshop

Feb13
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

Most writers realize just how useful e-books can be. From giving away as free incentives to subscribe to your site, to selling them on sites such as Kindle, Smashwords, and Lulu, they increase visibility and can earn you an income. They are a great marketing tool and simple to create.

Thanks to Suzanne Lieurance, the Working Writer’s Coach, I have the opportunity to offer a free chat workshop at: http://workingwriterscoach.com

Having created a number of e-books, I thought it would be helpful to offer a workshop like this to help other writers create an e-book to offer on their sites for an enticement to answer the call-to-action, or to publish and earn money.

Details for the Free eBook Chat Workshop:

Date: Friday, February 18, 2011
Topic: Tips for Creating Your Own Ebooks
Time: 7:00 – 7:15 Central Standard Time (5pm PST and 8pm EST)

Date: Monday, February 21, 2011
Topic: Basic Tips for Selling Your Own Ebooks
Time: 7:00 – 7:15 Central Standard Time

Date: Wednesday February 23, 2011
Topic: Selling Your Ebooks – Broadening Your Reach
Time: 7:00 – 7:15 Central Standard Time

So, just click on the Working Writer’s Coach link. Once you get to the site, scroll ALL the way DOWN to the red copyright area. The very last words, at the very bottom of the page will say “WordPress Log in.”

Click on the Log in link and sign into WordPress, or create a free account.

If it brings you to a Profile Page, just look on the upper left side of the screen for Writing Coach – “The Working . . . ” (it’s right above the word “Dashboard”). Click on that link – it will bring you to the Working Writer’s Coach site signed in and ready to chat.

Once on the site, scroll down, looking on the right sidebar for “Live Chats with the Working Writer Coach.”

You may get directly onto the page with the first Log in link, but for some reason I keep going to the Profile page.

As a bonus, for those who join in and contact me, I’ll be giving my e-book: How to Create an eBook: 5 Simple Steps

Go to the Working Writer’s Coach site today to make sure you are able to access the Live Chats.

I hope to see you there!

As an author, most of us are aware that writing books may not be a lucrative endeavor. In fact, it most likely won’t be. But, there are other avenues you can take to earn an income or at least supplement your income.

Each of you have knowledge and skills that others would like to learn.

Maybe you’re a great cook and have mouthwatering recipes you can share. Maybe you are a wiz at creating crafts. Or, maybe you are an expert in marketing, or finance. Whatever your area of expertise, there is an audience just waiting to learn from you.

You may be wondering how you can reach that audience.

The answer: e-books.

E-books are a simple product to create and with services such as Lulu.com, Smashwords.com, and Amazon’s Kindle, you can have a ready-made worldwide market. And, statistics show that the e-book market is steadily growing and e-readers are becoming must-have household items. You should want to be a part of that growth.

Special Features to Help You Target Your Market

Your eBook Title

To market your e-book effectively, your keyword should be incorporated in your title, and it should be a title that will grab a reader. Look at the two titles below; which one will grab a reader and quickly let him know that his money problems can be solved by selling e-books?

You Can Earn an Income by Selling eBooks

Note: Be sure your title is reflective of the e-book content. If you’re writing about apples, don’t title it, All About Oranges.

Your Book Cover

As with your title, you want the cover to grab a reader. There are number of image services where you can get free images, just be sure you can use the image on products for sale and without attribution.

The cover should also be reflective of the book content.

Book Category and Keywords

Taking advantage of free e-book publishing services allows you to target specific markets through their category and keyword functions. But, before you choose a category or keywords, do your homework. Look over the available choices and pick a category that best fits your product. In regard to keywords, research those that will be effective – look for long-tail keywords, they have less competition.

Take your time with this step, it can mean the difference between no sales, some sales, and huge sales.

Book Description

Another important feature these services provide is an ample book description area. Again, take your time and create a ‘hook’ description. If you belong to a critique group, ask them to go over your content before uploading it. For those who don’t belong to a critique group (if you’re an author, you should belong to one) try asking in one of your writing groups, or ask a writing friend for some input.

I’ve published e-books on Lulu and recently published with Kindle. And, if I can do it, anyone can. I won’t sugar coat it though, it does take some effort and time, but the results are worth it. You can have a ready-to-go product for sale within a day. If you get proficient at publishing on these sites, you can complete a project in a couple of hours.
