Keep Your Website Focused

In a recent teleseminar about the importance of creating a focused brand and website, the presenter of the class happened to pull up one of my sites. She quickly noted a couple of obvious errors that I let slip by.

While I really should have known better, it seems as we get caught up in our writing careers sometimes it’s easy to forget to remain focused.

That’s a no-no! It’s important to present a focused brand and site.

Okay, so what were my possible money costing mistakes?

1. Create a website or blog using your own name.

I created my first site before I learned the ropes. Jumping in feet first, without any thought of future endeavors, I named my first site based on my first children’s book. It happened I had a co-author and I used both our names for the site.

So, you may be asking, what’s the problem with this move? Well, nothing, if all my future books, articles, and other writing endeavors included that co-author.

But, as any writer can tell you this is usually not the case.

While you can redirect one site to another, it’s not the same. You end up possibly confusing readers or new visitors. And, if you don’t redirect to your new site, you’ll dilute you traffic.

The simplest fix to this problem is to avoid it.

The purpose of having your name as the site name is to create a specific brand/platform that is YOU. And, having your name as the site name will also make it easier for people searching with your name as a keyword to find you.

This is not to say that you can’t have a site/s specifically for your book/s, but it’s important to also have a site with your name as the domain name as the core. Remember, you are branding you as an author.

2. If you are branding yourself as a children’s writer, keep your site specific to writing for children.

This holds true for whatever your platform is – keep it focused.

This was another of my big mistakes that I let slip by. As I progressed in my writing, I ventured into a number of writing arenas including ghostwriting, freelance writing, and even copywriting. Instead of keeping those areas separate, I brought them into my children’s writing site.

So, why is this a mistake? Simple. Dilution of expertise.

In the subheading of the children’s writing site, I mentioned ghostwriting and freelance writing. Now, this may not be too far fetched because I do ghostwrite children’s books, but that shouldn’t be the emphasis at that site.

If you are branding yourself as a children’s writer, the focus of your site should be children’s writing. If you promote yourself as doing this, that, and the other thing, you’ll become known as the jack of all trades and master of none, thus creating dilution of expertise.

This goes for any specific genre you are writing in, if you intend to establish yourself as an expert in that field. You need to keep your site focused. Establish your brand and promote it.

If you are involved in other writing arenas, create a separate site for promoting yourself as an expert in those areas.

Websites That Work – 7 Key Factors (Part 2)

4. The ‘About Me’ or ‘About Us’ Page

Let the visitors know who you are with an About Me Page. This is especially important on sites that do not use the site owner’s name as the title. There are so many sites where a visitor needs to search to see who the site belongs to – it can be a bit frustrating, as well as a waste of the visitor’s time. There are even some sites that do not offer this information.

Along with the names of the site’s contributors, you should let the visitors know what the site is about, what they can expect from the site, what information will provided.

The About Me Page should include a bio along with any pertinent schooling and/or training. Most visitors want to know who is posting the content and what qualifies them to offer that particular information.

Providing this information allows the reader to develop a relationship with you.

5. The Media Page

Create a Media Page. This page will tell visitors what you’ve written and other qualifications that make you an expert in your field. You should also include your books, reviews of your work, brief synopses and possibly excerpts, links to the sales pages, testimonials and awards, links to interviews others have written on you, events/workshops you’ve presented, your appearances, and links to all your other sites.

6. The Contact Page

Your contact information needs to be available. This means having a Contact Page that offers a contact form, or your email address. A visitor may have a question, comment, or request for your services; you want that visitor to be able to know how to reach you.

7. The Resource Page

Probably the second most important factor that will make visitors find your site valuable is providing a Resource Page. This page should provide links to pertinent books, sites, and tools related to your niche. Visitor will appreciate the effort and information, thereby making your site of value to them. It will also prompt them to link to your site, and recommend it to others.

And remember, when creating a website, simple is usually best.

Websites That Work – 7 Key Factors (Part 1)

Marketing in an oversaturated market is a difficult journey. Whether you’re promoting a book, services, or other product, you will have tons of competition. And, if you don’t have a website, you won’t be able to get in the marketing game.

No matter what product or service you’re offering, having a website is an absolutely must.

While it’s not that difficult to create a website or blogsite using services, such as WordPress (http://wordpress.com) or Blogger (http://blogger.com), there are essential steps you will need to take in order to create an EFFECTIVE site.

Here is a list of 7 of the most essential and bare-bottom basics that are needed for an effective website:

1. The Name of Your Site

Create a site with your name as the domain name. Even if you already have one or more sites with different names, take the time to create one with your name. This can be your central site that leads to your other specific platforms. Think of it as the Sun to your other orbiting web planets.

If you have multiple sites, include them on your Media Page and on your About You page.

2. The Subheading

When including a site subheading, think of your platform. In your subheading add keywords you want associated with your site. These are words that should quickly inform the search engines what your site is about.

3. The Opt-in Box

Provide a readily visible opt-in box. This is one of the only ways you will be able to create a mailing list. A useful way to entice visitors to sign up for your info emails or newsletter is to offer a free gift. Usually an e-book related to your site’s focus is a practical gift.

The opt-in box should be placed in the top portion of your sidebar, and must be immediately visible upon landing on the page – this means it needs to be above the fold line.

Using Paypal to Sell Your Own eBooks

While digital publishing has been around for 40 years, the week of March 6th, it seems to have skyrocketed within the last year.

The e-book market is taking off and so are the authors who are taking advantage of this path to income and an audience.

I have a few e-books under my belt, but haven’t really taken the time to get them easily available for sale. Well, that’s changed since I began taking advantage of Paypal’s BUY BUTTON system.

If you have a Paypal account, all you have to do is go under Merchant’s Services and you’re afforded the option of getting single BUY NOW BUTTONS or a SHOPPING CART for multiple products.

If you don’t have an account with them, it’s easy to create one, and it’s free.

The instructions for the Buy Buttons are fairly easy to understand, until you get to providing the link if you are offering an e-book download for sale.

Here you need to click on option #3 to get to the area where you can input the downloadable link to your e-book. I think it’s under Advanced Options.

Then, just finish the process and you’ll be given the HTML code for the button. You actually get two versions: one for your website, and one for email use. Pretty easy and quick!

One other slight inconvenience is that when a customer purchases through the BUY BUTTON, they are not automatically taken to the product. The are offered 3 options:

The first option is to Go to the Seller’s Email Address. But, instead of being directed to the email address the purchaser is directed to the product he/she just purchased.

I’m not sure why Paypal has it set up like this. It makes getting the e-book confusing and even frustrating for those who aren’t aware of the situation.

But, once the seller is aware of this, he/she can provide instructions on the product’s landing page.

The upside to using Paypal or Google Checkout Buy Buttons is there is NO middle man.

On sites such as Lulu, Smashwords, and even Kindle, you get a percentage of the sales of your products. Using your own Buy Buttons the sale is all yours.

And, it’s convenient – the buyer just clicks on the Buy Button and off they go directly to pay for the product.

Selling eBooks – Reach Your Tarket Market Through Free Services

As an author, most of us are aware that writing books may not be a lucrative endeavor. In fact, it most likely won’t be. But, there are other avenues you can take to earn an income or at least supplement your income.

Each of you have knowledge and skills that others would like to learn.

Maybe you’re a great cook and have mouthwatering recipes you can share. Maybe you are a wiz at creating crafts. Or, maybe you are an expert in marketing, or finance. Whatever your area of expertise, there is an audience just waiting to learn from you.

You may be wondering how you can reach that audience.

The answer: e-books.

E-books are a simple product to create and with services such as Lulu.com, Smashwords.com, and Amazon’s Kindle, you can have a ready-made worldwide market. And, statistics show that the e-book market is steadily growing and e-readers are becoming must-have household items. You should want to be a part of that growth.

Special Features to Help You Target Your Market

Your eBook Title

To market your e-book effectively, your keyword should be incorporated in your title, and it should be a title that will grab a reader. Look at the two titles below; which one will grab a reader and quickly let him know that his money problems can be solved by selling e-books?

Make Money Selling eBooks

Note: Be sure your title is reflective of the e-book content. If you’re writing about apples, don’t title it, All About Oranges.

Your Book Cover

As with your title, you want the cover to grab a reader. There are number of image services where you can get free images, just be sure you can use the image on products for sale and without attribution.

The cover should also be reflective of the book content.

Book Category and Keywords

Taking advantage of free e-book publishing services allows you to target specific markets through their category and keyword functions. But, before you choose a category or keywords, do your homework. Look over the available choices and pick a category that best fits your product. In regard to keywords, research those that will be effective – look for long-tail keywords, they have less competition.

Take your time with this step, it can mean the difference between no sales, some sales, and huge sales.

Book Description

Another important feature these services provide is an ample book description area. Again, take your time and create a ‘hook’ description. If you belong to a critique group, ask them to go over your content before uploading it. For those who don’t belong to a critique group (if you’re an author, you should belong to one) try asking in one of your writing groups, or ask a writing friend for some input.

I’ve published e-books on Lulu and recently published with Kindle. And, if I can do it, anyone can. I won’t sugar coat it though, it does take some effort and time, but the results are worth it. You can have a ready-to-go product for sale within a day. If you get proficient at publishing on these sites, you can complete a project in a couple of hours.

5 Simple and Basic Marketing Reminders

Having yearly, monthly, and/or weekly marketing goals are crucial to achieving success. With goals, you know where you’re heading and can work toward that end.

Marketing goals can be considered a marketing plan, and it will have a number of steps or objectives that must be set in motion and accomplished.

Whether you’re trying to sell a product or services, five of the bare basic marketing strategies are:

1. Create a presence and platform

Creating an online presence and platform can be initiated by creating a website or blog. First though, you’ll need to be sure of your niche because the site name and content should reflect your area of expertise is.

Remember, plan first. Choose a site name that will grow with you. Using an author as an example, if you choose a site name, Picture Books with [Your Name], you’ve limited yourself. What if your next book is for young adults?

Some authors create sites with the name of their book. This is a good strategy for pure focus on that one book, but again, what happens when more books become available. Will you create a site for each of your books?

While you can do this, you will be stretching yourself thin and diluting your main focus: you as the author of multiple books.

Leave room to grow; it’s always advisable to use your name as the site’s name.

In addition, with today’s gone-in-a-second attention span, it’s a good idea to keep your site simple. Sites that take a few seconds or more to load may cause you to lose potential buyers.

2. Increase visibility

Writing content for your readers/visitors is the way to increase visibility. The word is: Content is King. Provide interesting, informative, and/or entertaining content that will prompt the reader to come back.

Also, be sure your content is pertinent to your site, and keep your site and content focused on your platform.

3 Draw traffic to your site

To draw traffic to your site, promote your posts by using social media. You can also do article marketing which will increase your visibility reach.

Another strategy is to offer your readers free gifts, such as an e-book relevant to your niche. This will help to increase your usefulness to the reader.

This is considered organic marketing; it funnels traffic back to your site with valuable content and free offers.

4 Have effective call-to-actions

Your site must have call-to-action keywords that will motivate readers to visit and click on your links. Keywords to use include:

• Get your Free gift now for subscribing
• Subscribe to our Newsletter
• Free e-book to offer on your own site
• Buy Now
• Sign up
• Don’t hesitate, take advantage of our expert services
• Be sure to Bookmark this site

You get the idea, motivate the reader to want what you’re offering and give him/her a CLEAR and VISIBLE call-to-action. Make it as simple as possible for the visitor to buy what you’re offering.

5. Develop a relationship with your readers

It’s been noted that only 1% of first time visitors will buy a product. Usually, only after developing a relationship through your newsletter, information, and offers will your potential customer or client click on the BUY NOW button.

While it will take some time and effort to implement and maintain these strategies, it will be worth it in the long run. Think of it as a long-term investment.

Book Promotion – Creating an Informational Funnel

When thinking of book marketing, there are a number of rungs on the marketing ladder. The first involves creating a quality product, in this case a book. You want a book that you’ll be proud to offer for sale, and a book that customers will want to buy.

Once you have a finished product/book, you need to move onto the promotion basics. This rung on the ladder involves establishing a presence – you’ll need to create visibility and a platform. To do this, the first step is to get a website or blog. Next, you will need to join writing groups in your genre, groups in your target market, and other social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook.

After you’ve established a presence, you will need to create an informational funnel leading back to your website. The purpose of this funnel is to bring traffic, inbound links, to your site.

The more traffic to your site the greater your visibility with the search engines. More traffic also means a greater chance of visitors purchasing what you’re offering.

When it comes to an informational funnel, content rules. Here are three strategies to increase traffic to your site.

1. Add Content to Your Blog

Make your presence known by offering information in the form of content on your blog. Content is what will make you an expert in your niche, genre, or area. But, just posting the content to your site will not create the traffic you need. Each time you publish content to your site, you need to let your social networks know about it.

Tweet it and post about it to Facebook and your other social networks. Be sure to always include a clickable url link that goes directly to the article. This is a part of inbound marketing – it leads visitors back to your site through an information funnel.

In addition, using effective keywords in your posts, related to your site’s platform, will help the search engines index your content.

2. Article Marketing

Once you feel comfortable with adding content to your blog, you can now venture out into the article marketing arena to capture a larger audience. While most article directories have guidelines, they are fairly lenient. Follow the guidelines and post an article to one, two, or ten different directories. Most of them don’t require original articles, so you can use articles you’ve posted on your blog.

Usually you will be allowed to include a brief bio in the form of a resource box. Make it short and sweet. Be sure it links back to your website or blog, whichever you want the traffic to go to (if you have more than one site).

Those who click on the link will be creating inbound links to your site which is a feature Google and the other search engines like. In fact, quality inbound links are an important aspect of search engine optimization (SEO).

3. Offer to be a Guest on Other Quality Sites

Another avenue of inbound marketing is offering your articles to other quality blogs or sites; you become a featured writer on the site by providing a guest article. It might be viewed as visiting another neighborhood. The particular site you are featured on has its own set of visitors, thereby broadening your visibility.

Do your research though, before you approach bloggers. Make sure the fit is right by checking prior posts on the site. In addition, when you approach the blog owner to ask about a guest post, let him know that you are familiar with his site.

And, be sure to always make it a win-win situation. Let the blog owner know that you will promote your feature post, and you might mention that you’ll include his site in your newsletter.

Finally, self-edit all your articles before you post them or send them off.

Tip: Using content to draw visitors back to your site is inbound or organic marketing. It is free, and it works by creating an informational funnel leading back to your site. In order for inbound marketing to work effectively, you need to provide valuable content on a regular basis.

Every author has thought it, said it, and heard it: promotion is the roll-up-your-sleeves, and dig-in part of writing. It’s the much more difficult and time consuming aspect of writing that every author needs to become involved with . . . if he wants to sell his books.

To actually sell a book, you need to have a quality product. This is the bare-bottom, first rung of book promotion . . . the foundation.

The Foundation

Create a Quality Product

The very first step in book promotion is to create a quality product. Hopefully, you noticed I said create a quality product, not just a good story. What this means is that all aspects of your book need to be top notch.

A. The Story

To start at the very beginning, the first factor to be dealt with is to be sure your story has all the essential elements. According to Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, there are five major elements of a story: characters, setting, plot, point of view, and theme.

All the elements of a story should complement each other, should move each other forward, draw the reader in, and end with a satisfying conclusion. They should work together to create a story that will be remembered.

Suppose your story is action packed and plot driven, but it lacks believable and sympathetic characters, it will fall short. The same holds true if you have a believable and sympathetic character, but the story lacks movement. Again, it will be lacking. As with all things in life balance is necessary, the same holds true when writing a story.

B. Join a Critique Group

Yes, this is part of creating a quality story. Even experienced authors depend on the unique perspective and extra eyes that each critique member provides. They will help find: grammatical errors, holes in your story, unclear sentences and paragraphs, overuse of particular words, and weak verbs, among other elements.

They will also provide guidance and suggestions.

C. Editing

Yes, again, this is a necessary step to take to ensure your manuscript is in the best shape possible before it becomes a book. Look for an experienced and qualified editor to help tweak your manuscript. But, before you send it off to be edited, self-edit it first. There are a number of articles out there in cyberspace on self-editing. Take the time and read a few, then go over your manuscript.

D. Cover and Design

This step is more relevant to those who decide to self-publish, or use a Print-on-Demand (POD). The cover is the first impression a reader will usually have of your book, next is the interior design. These aspects are just as important as the story itself. I’m sure you’re familiar with the expression that you only get one shot at making a good first impression. Well, you can relate that to your book cover.

Don’t skimp or time, effort, or money when coming up with your book’s cover and design.

Tip: If you are writing a children’s book, do not do your own illustrations unless you’re a professional illustrator.
