Book Marketing: Choose a Website Domain Name

Sep17
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

The first rung on your marketing ladder is to create a quality product, in the case of an author, that would be a book. You need to create an engaging story, be part of a critique group, make sure the manuscript gets edited, and have a knock-out cover.

Creating the book might be considered Research and Development under the Marketing umbrella, and the foundation of a marketing strategy.

The second step or rung on the marketing ladder is the actual book promotion: creating a platform and brand for you and your book. This is accomplished through visibility. A platform is a means to let readers know what your area of expertise is.

You may be shaking your head and thinking you don’t have an area of expertise, well the very first step to establish yourself as an expert is to create a website or blog.

Your Website’s Domain Name

Choose your domain name carefully and think ahead. Marketing experts always advise using ‘your name’ for your domain name. While you can have multiple sites, your name should be your main or central site.

On the other hand, if you write in a specific genre, you should include that in your domain name. If you’re a children’s writer, maybe: Children’s Books by Your Name, or Picture Books by Your Name. The more specific you make your domain name the more likely those searching online for that genre will find you.

Why is it so important to have your name in your central site’s title?

The answer is for those searching by your name to find you. Maybe Reader A doesn’t know the name of your book, but does remember your author name.

Why if you write in a specific genre is it important to include that in your site’s title?

Simply put: If you sell shoes and your domain name is John Smith, how will those searching online for shoes ever find you?

Using Keywords in Your Website Name

The idea is to make multiple avenues of search that lead to your site. In other words, you need multiple keywords that are relevant to your site. Keywords that will allow the search engines to index your site and allow readers doing online searches to find your site. Again, the more specific the better.

And, be sure to use appropriate keywords in the subtitle of your site.

As mentioned, you can create multiple sites. You might have ‘your name.com’ as your central site and then create other sites and choose other domain names for the titles of your books, or possible for a particular niche or genre.

For example, I have a blogsite specifically for my books: Walking Through Walls (http://walkingthroughwalls-kcioffi.blogspot.com), and another specifically for Day’s End Lullaby (http://daysendlullaby). These sites offer information related to the books.

With the number of ‘free’ websites and blogsites available, you can have a site that’s unique for each of your books and/or niches that you write in.

The Wait is Over, Your Book is Finally Available for Sale

Jul29
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

It’s a long road, as most authors can probably tell you, from first starting your story to the day it’s actually available for sale. A road filled with writing, outlines, revisions, critiquing, self-editing, some doubts and frustration (maybe a lot of doubts and frustration), more revisions, critiquing, and editing, and so on.

That road can take you one to two years to travel, but then . . . you reach your destination . . . your goal. All your doubts, impatience, and frustration disappears. Your book is now available for sale at retailers and bookstores! Now you can relax and take a breather before you start on your next book.

Uh, but, wait a minute. You thought writing the book and having to be patient through the submissions and publishing journey was tough? Well, roll up your sleeves and dig in, because now comes the hard part – selling your book.

Okay, all this is a lead-up to my big announcement: Walking Through Walls is now available for sale. :)

Amazon doesn’t have the book’s cover on the sales page yet, but click on the blank image – I uploaded the cover to it. Hopefully, they’ll get the cover up in 4-8 weeks.

Get your copy today at:

AMAZON

BARNES & NOBLE

You can also order Walking Through Walls today at:
4RV Publishing Catalog

And don’t forget to get out the Walking Through Walls YouTube Book Trailer: http://youtu.be/90aJO5qHHWc

For those who haven’t heard of Walking Through Walls, it is a middle grade fantasy adventure based on an ancient Chinese tale. You can read a number of reviews, check out a couple of interior illustrations, and find out more about my book at: http://walkingthroughwalls-kcioffi.blogspot.com

And, for anyone who has read Walking Through Walls it’d be greatly appreciated if you’d write a review, however small or large, and post it to Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing . . .whichever and where ever you have the time to go to.
For those who have already written a review, please post it to any or all of the sites mentioned above!

Reviews are a powerful selling tool.

I take the time to post my reviews to the usual places, and I always make them long enough to post to the article directories, particularly EzineArticles.

This strategy produces a couple of benefits:

1. The author gets free effective promotion to a broader audience.
2. The reviewer gets the satisfaction of helping out a fellow author, plus increased visibility from the review posting sites and article directories. And, remember, you never know who will end up reading your work online, whether a review, an article, an e-book, or other content.

And, please go to the Walking Through Walls page on AMAZON and CLICK on the LIKE button. Then down just a bit down and on the right hand side, you’ll find a Tweet Button and Facebook Button – if you click on both that’ll add more sparks to the promotion fire!

For those of you who haven’t read the book yet, but intend to, after you’ve read it, if you liked it, PLEASE write a brief review and post it to any or all of the places I mentioned above.

Any and all help in bringing visibility to Walking Through Walls will be greatly appreciated.

Please Tweet, Facebook, and Google+ this post!

Thanks!

Outsourcing Articles – Is it Right for You?

Jun12
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

Recently, a writer/marketer who always has valuable information recommended outsourcing as a means of effectively and quickly getting a number of articles written. He was using a particular service to create a niche site for affiliate marketing, but it can be used just as effectively to create visibility and traffic to your own sites and products.

The marketer stated that he paid $3 to have articles rewritten and distributed to hundreds of article directories.

Wait a minute . . .

While I’m sure this is true, guaranteed the rewritten articles are not done by professional writers. It’s possible the writers or spinners are using a rewriting/spinning program.

A rewriting program chooses random words to change, or the author creates a list of words for the program to find and change. Some can also rework paragraphs, but it’s not the same as a writer. These programs can’t tell if they’re missing the mark on clarity in the content, or if they are changing the meaning.

Outsourcing these types of articles is similar to purchasing private label rights (PLR) articles. PLRs are articles that you can buy by the bundle at a low cost and use with your own byline.

But, consumer beware. You may have an embarrassing situation on your hands if you don’t proofread and edit the articles before using them. Often, these articles are rewritten by non-English speaking writers, or writers who are overly concerned with quantity over quality.

Remember, it’s the content that creates the organic traffic funnel to your site. You should offer your visitors/readers quality content. And, now that Google took steps to reduce spam sites, it’s even more important to have quality content.

But, for those of you who don’t mind having to edit each article, PLRs or outsourcing on-the-cheap may be an option. Certainly, there are some writers who feel it’s easier to rewrite an existing article than create one from scratch.

Some of us are on the other end of the outsourcing chain. We ghostwrite or rewrite articles for marketers or others who are looking for quality content. As professional writers, we know the importance of creating quality over quantity. If you want to create an impressive article utilizing facts and quotes, and shining with clarity, you can’t use rewriting programs, or writers who aren’t professional.

One important factor as a writer is that your writing is a reflection of you and your writing ability; it should always be the best it can be, whether you are writing for yourself or for a client. The same holds true if you are hiring a professional writer to ghostwrite articles for you; unless you’re very familiar with the ghostwriter’s work, be sure to proofread any content you’re publishing before hand. Remember, your name will be associated with that content.

Depending on your writing needs, you will have to decide if you want quality or quantity, if you choose to outsource.

If you are an affiliate marketer, it’s all about getting as much traffic as possible to a niche site that has a copy ad landing page urging the visitor to BUY. The more traffic the greater the chances of sales and an affiliate commission. Conversion rates rule . . . quality often takes a back seat to quantity. But, again, the search engines are cracking down on fluff or spam sites, so be sure to take that into account.

Walking Through Walls Video

May28
2011
Leave a Comment Written by admin

Children's fantasy story Well, the publication of my children’s fantasy chapter book is taking its final lap. Thanks to Aidana WillowRaven, Walking Through Walls now has its first YouTube video.

Check it out at: http://youtu.be/90aJO5qHHWc

Here’s a brief synopsis of the story:

Walking Through Walls is based on an ancient Chinese tale and set in 16th century China. Twelve year old Wang dreams of becoming rich, powerful and feared. He studies the legend of the Eternals, a group of mystics who are known and feared for their amazing magical feats. When he is sure they are real, he journeys to their home in the Loa Mountain and begins an apprenticeship with the Master Eternal.

Unfortunately, Wang does not have the patience or moral fiber for the long and arduous undertaking. Before he leaves his apprenticeship, he gets the Master to teach him one magic formula – walking through walls.

The book is scheduled to be available for sale on July 1st and I’ll be soon working on a couple of virtual book tours. This is part of every author’s ‘must do’ marketing strategy in order to create visibility for the book.

Stay tuned and I’ll keep you informed as to what marketing steps I take to promote my book.

You can check out the blogsite I created for Walking Through Walls at: http://walkingthroughwalls-kcioffi.blogspot.com

Podcasting for Writers Workshop

May06

Leave a Comment Written by admin

I am the founder and manager of Writers on the Move, a group of experienced and new writers/authors of multiple genres who strive to share their combined wealth of writing and marketing knowledge with all, as well as use cross-promotional strategies to increase visibility.

As a NEW feature to the group, Writers on the Move is now offering Workshops on writing and marketing. The first FREE class will be presented by Maggie Ball: Podcasting for Writers; it is scheduled for May 16th at 7pm EST.

Registration is required, so please stop by our blogsite for the details:
http://vbt-writersonthemove.blogspot.com/2011/04/all-new-writers-on-move-workshop.html

Or, email Maggie Ball directly at:
maggieball@compulsivereader.com

Please put “Podcasting Workshop” in the subject box.

After registering you will receive a PDF with a comprehensive outline specifically designed for the class. This will allow you to work on creating a podcast before the class and then ask any questions you may have during the workshop. You will also receive the password to access the chat.

A bit about the workshop:

The simplest definition of a podcast is just a recorded radio show and Maggie will provide the information you need to get your podcast up and running. She’ll define what a podcast is and the many different ways you can either do a single podcast, or start your own “radio show” or even syndication with recorded podcasts.

This will be a very informative workshop for writers who want, rather need to bring their books and/or services to a larger audience. If you’re blogging now, the next step is to create podcasts.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Jesus My Son: Mary’s Journal of Jesus’ Early Life

Interestingly, an effective marketing strategy is to hook up with other authors/writers and participate in Joint Ventures (JVs). What this means is if you have a new book coming out and want to reach more than your individual mailing list and social networks, you join forces with writer friends or acquaintances to promote your book for a ONE DAY SPECIAL.

Suppose it’s your new book; you contact one to several authors who might be willing to put your prewritten promo on their sites and social networks, and (THIS IS THE VERY IMPORTANT PART) are willing to provide a freebie to any one who purchases the book on that day.

According to book marketing specialists, Brain Judd and Daniel Hall, this has the potential to put your book on Amazon’s TOP HUNDRED list in one or more categories – just for one day’s promo.

Okay, so here is the JV in practice. I’m participating in Mary Bailey’s April 27th promo for her new book, My Son: Mary’s Journal of Jesus’ Early Life, by offering a FREE bonus gift, How to Create an Ebook and What You Can Do With It.

Dear Friends,

I want to give you the opportunity to win some awesome prizes and receive some valuable gifts. Many partners have joined in this campaign to offer some great bonus gifts. Receive many free book downloads, free music, discounts, and many other products. Liz Lemon Swindle, the artist of Mary’s Heart, the painting on the cover of Jesus My Son, is offering a chance to win a FRAMED PRINT of this lovely painting, a $99.00 value. Feel free to share this offer with your friends and family so they can also enjoy these awesome gifts.

Are you searching for a unique Mother’s Day gift?

Join Mary Bailey on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, for a campaign of her book, Jesus My Son: Mary’s Journal of Jesus’ Early Life. Purchase a hardcopy at Amazon.com from seller MRBent and receive a 35% discount. Also, get immediate access to $100’s worth of valuable free bonus gifts. Enter to win prizes including a framed print of Mary’s Heart, the cover of Jesus My Son. This lovely print is valued at $99.00.

What gift could be more special than a journal written by God’s chosen mother about the everyday activities of the son she shared with our Father? Any mother will enjoy listening to Mary’s heart as she pours out her emotions in her journal entries.

Mary’s journal offers a fresh perspective to a very old story.

A reader writes, “The story, written as if Mary, mother of Jesus, was keeping a journal of her life, drew me in and absorbed me completely from beginning to end.”

Click here to Claim all your Bonus gifts and register to win the prizes just by ordering one book.

Share this amazing offer with your family and friends.

On some browsers, the hyperlink does not work. If it doesn’t, just past this link into your address box.

As a participant in a JV, you will be expected to promote the book in all your social networks – this is a main part of it’s effectiveness.

While it may be a bit time consuming, you are creating visibility for yourself and your promotional product, and you should be able to rely on the pay-it-forward factor for the time you need help with your book.

Pretty much a win-win situation.
