This is Part 2 of “Before You Self-Publish.” I tweaked it a bit and made it a stand alone post.
4 Steps on the Self-Publishing Road
If you’ve looked around and decided on self-publishing with a print-on-demand, a subsidy, or a co-publishing company, there are certain steps that need to be taken before you think about signing a contract. And, it’s important you realize that this road to publication will cost money that you may not recoup. You will need to work diligently to ensure a return on your investment.
Here are four steps to help you on the self-publishing road:
1. Learn the craft of writing
Read and read and read. Read in the genre you are writing and read books on writing.
You will also need to join one or two writing groups. Be sure they have experienced, as well as new writers on board. The veterans will help you when questions arise, and they undoubtedly will. Ask members for recommendations on books you should read to hone your craft.
This will also be a tool to begin your networking in addition to a valuable learning experience. Just in the forum messages alone, you’ll pick up valuable tidbits of information. And, you can always ask questions.
Along with writing groups, it’s essential to join a critique group specifically focused on the genre you write. The members’ critiques and insights will prove to be invaluable.
If possible, take some writing classes or e-courses. There are authors who occasionally offer free instruction. You might also think about paying for some instruction, especially if you believe the instructor can help you hone your craft and help you create a quality product.
In addition, attend writing conferences. If you can’t afford one, there are a couple of absolutely great online ones. Check out the free Muse Online Writers Conference. It’s held each October and is a week long.
Note: This step is necessary no matter what form of publishing you intend to venture into.
2. Research self-publishing companies
Whether you’ve chosen a print-on-demand, subsidy, or co-publishing company, research a number of them first before signing a contract. Along with finding out what services they offer and the cost, check into their reputation.
3. Learn about marketing
If you’ve taken your time, you should have a polished product to offer. You should have been reading and reading, and reading some more; joined a critique and writing group; and worked toward learning the craft of writing. Now, you will need to focus on the marketing element of writing.
You can join a couple of marketing groups, study blogs specializing in marketing, read marketing books, and so on. This is the ONGOING process. Unless you have the money to hire a publicist or marketer, you will need to roll up your sleeves and sell your book.
Tip: While you’re in the throes of writing your book, create a blog or website and begin establishing your expertise – why should someone buy your book. You need to become visible; a blog or website will be your base and stepping stone in this area. You will need to post content to the site on a regular basis also.
“If I build it, they will come,” doesn’t cut it in the internet world.
Note: This is another necessary step in any form of publishing, but especially in self-publishing.
4. Don’t be in a rush
Make sure every element of your book exudes quality. This entails the cover and interior design, the content (you want a good story that has been professionally edited), illustrations if warranted, and pricing.
Take your time and the steps necessary to ensure your book has every opportunity for success. Don’t just jump in…it can be a very expensive splash!
